BARCHboi is an Australian multidisciplinary game developer, artist and musician whose work focuses on furry and feral character design, experimental game development, digital art and music. He is the creator of Feral Scape, an open-world dark fantasy RPG built around quadruped animal characters. Written in his own game engine called Unfolding Engine, a 2d real time modding focused tool kit to make RPG games.
He develops much of his work across disciplines, from the underlying technology and gameplay systems to character design, artwork, sound and presentation.
Working across both independent games and digital art, Barch’s practice sits somewhere between game development, illustration, Music, worldbuilding, furry fandom and interactive media.

Feral characters have been a major part of BARCHboi’s relationship with furry fandom and his creative life for years. Rather than treating furry characters as humans with animal features, he is especially interested in keeping the body language, anatomy and movement recognisably animal. Over time, that fascination became one of his strongest artistic specialties. BARCH was short for the previous game dev forum username Black Parchment, which got condensed to BARCH, boi was added in at the end for femme - butch. A nod to queer aspects.

What is feral character design? and why is it different from furry?
A feral design is similar to an anthropomorphic furry design, but with the creature having more quadruped or not standing on two legs. Sentient with a human mind.
Why does BARCHboi use quadruped feral forms instead of bipeds?
BARCHboi prefers quadruped and feral forms because they retain more of the silhouette, movement and physical language of real animals while still allowing human-level personality, he allows to tell more about a character through what animal they are which expresses itself in his storytelling. This creates character designs that feel less like humans wearing animal traits and more like animals inhabiting their own cultures. Also: prestige woof woof, grr grr.

BARCHboi felt odd in loving .midi files, enjoying early 3D models, and crying to watching the Windows XP tour music. Making music in that genre, he felt weird putting his music to a genre - is it New Age? He felt like it was Vaporwave, but didn't quite feel like it fitted Is it music inspired by Thomas Newman? Or africano european world? As well as BARCHboi felt very connected to the early demoscene movements of Amiga and Commodore .xm and .mod eras.
Luckily the people at Rate Your Music decided for him, that BARCHboi is Utopian Virtual, and BARCHboi is Utopian Schoolastic. Others started noticing and putting his works in global utopian schoolastic playlists, and utopian virtual playlists, so now he feels a part of a larger scene of people who are interested in those aesthetic.
